Greenlee of Marion route 3 cut and baled his alfalfa hay last week. He states that this al falfa was seeded last fall and he is pleased with the yield and quality of the hay. G. C Tabor of Old Fort route 1 recently secured the lime and fertilizer materials that he plans to apply to his meadow immedi ately following the first cutting this spring. Mr. Tabor states that the growth of the grass and clover is good and he will apply the fertilizer materials so the growth will continue to be good. M. A. Hollifield of Fairview Church community has a fine growth of crimson clover in the field south of his home that he plans to turn as a green manure crop. Plowing under winter cover crops is a good erosion control practice according to Mr. Holli field. C. J. Sigmon of Nebo route 1 began strip cropping the field south of his home recently, when he planted corn in every other strip between the terraces. He plans to sow the other strips in close growing crops. MISS HALL AWAY Miss Ruby Hall will leave Sat urday morning for Detroit, Mich., for a month’s visit with relatives. Her sister, Miss Caroline Hall, will be in the library during her absence. Miss Hall will make the trip with her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hall and chil dren, Nancy and Sara, who have been visiting here. CALLED TO DURHAM Mrs. J. L. Holman and daughter Farnsworth were called to Dur ham Tuesday because of the death of Mrs. Holman's brother, L. A. DELIVERS ADDRESS Hezekiah Greenlee delivered the address of welcome to several hundred people at Mills Chapel Baptist church Sunday afternoon where members of Mountain Home Lodge of Odd Fellows and their families and friends gather ed to celebrate Founders Day. The celebration was scheduled to be held earlier in May but was postponed until last Sunday in order to favor another meeting which was held on the original date set for it. VISITS SISTER Mrs. H. A. Spencer of West Palm Beach, Fla., spent last week end with her sister, Miss Sarah Kirby. It was the first time they had seen each other for six years. While here she visited Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Hooker, who were old friends. WILL ATTEND CONVENTION Dr. Henry E. Walden, pastor of Old Fort Baptist church, will leave on Monday for Memphis where he will attend the Southern Baptist convention which will be in session May 19 through 23. Dr. Walden expects to attend the pastors’ conference which will be held on Tuesday preceding the opening of the convention. RETURNS TO OLD HOME Miss Sarah Kirby will spend the month of June visiting friends and relatives in Bloomington, Indiana, her former home. This is her first visit back since she came to Black Mountain to live two years ago. P. H. Mashburn, prominent resi dent of Old Fort, remains critical ly ill at an Asheville hosuital where he has been for the past two weeks. HOME FROM GEORGIA The Rev. and Mrs. Walter Styles and Brooks have returned from a vacation trip through Georgia. They visited in Cum mings, Atlanta, Jackson, and Monticello. The Rev. Mr. Styles tireached at the Monticello Pres byterian church Sunday morning. AT SULLIVAN’S ISLAND Cecil Nanney spent the week end at Sullivan’s Island with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Nan ney, Sr., who are vacationing there this week. Burrus Funeral services for Mrs. Edie M Burrus, 66, who died Saturday morning at her home on Black Mountain highway after a lengthy illness were held Sunday after noon at 3 o’clock at Harrison funeral home in Black Mountain. The Rev. T. A. Painter pastor of the Piney Grove Presbyterian church officiated. Members of the Swannanoa Presbyterian church, of which she was a member, served as pall bearers. Pullman conductors of the Asheville division were honor ary pallbearers. The body was taken to Atlanta for burial in ’,v es t View cemetery Monday. Surviving are the husband, I’. H. Burrus: a daughter, Mrs. Dwight Wilson of Swannanoa; two brothers, Clarence and Austin Peel of Atlanta; a sister. Miss Vivian Peel of Atlanta. Mrs. Chester Deese Mrs. Chester Deese, 75, died Thursday morning in an Asheville hospital after a lengthy illness.
